2021: Year In Review

December 6, 2021

A recap of 2021 shows progress moving fast in Henderson, Nevada, with the city breaking new ground in manufacturing and opening new doors to opportunity and prosperity. The milestones were many, including:

A new website opens digital doors to opportunity.

The launch of a new economic development website created a robust digital presence for Henderson, enhancing the city’s global profile while serving as a strategic entry point for site selectors and prospective industry. A Datastory data portal added easy-to-use interactive digital discovery through rich interactive data and map visualizations, putting a wealth of actionable and valuable market intelligence at users’ fingertips.

“We are telling a compelling story of opportunity through this new website,” notes Derek Armstrong, Director of Economic Development and Tourism for Henderson.

A world-class workforce training center opens doors to higher performance.

Work began this year on the Westside Workforce Training Center, a $12 million state-of-the-art training facility where cutting-edge training environments mirror advanced manufacturing lines, and where spaces are planned for manufacturing and welding training, as well as computer and healthcare laboratories, classrooms and office space. Training curriculum at the Center will be equally innovative, thanks to the College of Southern Nevada’s $2 million Rapid Response Advanced Manufacturing Training program, funded in part by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development WINN agency, to create a workforce of the future in Henderson.

“Workforce is going to be a game-changer for Henderson in 2022,” Armstrong predicts.

Haas Automation breaks ground on a new facility, launching a new era of Henderson manufacturing success.

The Workforce Training Center is rising alongside its foremost client, Haas Automation, the world’s largest manufacturer of machine tools. This year, Haas broke ground on a new manufacturing complex. Located in the Henderson Employment Corridor, the $200 million+ project that will employ some 2,500 workers in the first 10 years of operation. While the California-based company was initially attracted by Henderson’s proximity and low-cost access to California and by the City’s low tax, pro-business environment, the promise of world-class training for Henderson’s affordable workforce sealed the deal.

“We are a promising location for global manufacturing, in part because we deliver on our promises,” Armstrong points out.

Henderson opens up a lead as a rapidly growing national pro sports hub.

In 2021, Henderson added several leading teams to the City’s fast-growing portfolio of pro sports assets, which now includes teams of the NFL, AHL, WNBA and WFL. Already home to the Las Vegas Raiders’ headquarters and training facility, and to the AHL powerhouse Henderson Silver Knights, Henderson was chosen this year as the new home for the headquarters and training center of the WNBA Las Vegas Aces. In another success, the Lifeguard Center, serving dual duty as the Silver Knights new practice facility and Henderson community center, proved to be a catalyst for the revitalization of the historic Water Street District—a vibrant addition that validates the creative teamwork between the City and the Silver Knights organization that made the Lifeguard Center possible. Also, this year the newly reimagined Henderson Events Center began its transition to the Dollar Loan Center, where the Silver Knights will play their games and where a new WFL expansion team will bring more sports excitement and prosperity to Henderson.

“Teamwork has been the key to our sports success, and now the sector presents a major growth opportunity for Henderson,” Armstrong notes.

A new business hub opens opportunity through a critical connection between employers and job-seekers.

In the fall of 2021, the new Employ NV Business Hub opened in Henderson City Hall. Just a few steps away from the City’s offices for business licensing, the Hub is a giant leap forward in convenience and greater opportunity for new business owners, offering abundant—and free—workforce resources. The Hub offers access to the state’s largest job listing database; just as importantly the Hub is staffed with specialists ready to identify potential job candidates and to provide pre-screening and assessment. In that pre-screening process, the Hub is also well-positioned to recruit students for Workforce Training Center programs.

“The Employ NV Business Hub is a powerful resource for businesses of all sizes, from small startups to large corporations,” Armstrong says.

A celebration opens lines of communication.

Celebrating the contributions and success of Henderson’s manufacturing sector, Henderson’s Manufacturing Day 2021 was a well-attended and important event, where local manufacturers were able to network, make key connections and get vital workforce information from Southern Nevada’s Workforce Connections office.

Armstrong says, “We had a lot to celebrate in 2021, and now we have even more to look forward to in 2022!”
