With tens of thousands of people moving into the Las Vegas valley over the past decade, Southern Nevada’s economy continues to grow and diversify. It is estimated that nearly 15% of new residents come to the area already possessing professional, management, or technical skills. A population of over one million people lives within a 45-minute commute of Henderson-area business parks, allowing the opportunity for Henderson-based business to attract employees for all positions and skill levels. The largest age groups for Henderson residents are 25-54 year-olds, representing 41.7% of the city’s population (2008-2012 US Census Bureau ACS). This indicates Henderson possesses a high percentage of workforce-age population and continues to attract more.

Demand for highly-trained technical and professional staff is critical to employee recruitment and retention. The City of Henderson has emerged as a hub for higher education institutions which provides employers an excellent opportunity to attract and develop key staff.

Nine higher education institutions have established themselves in Henderson to meet the needs of future workforces. These institutions – as well as the emergence of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) as a leading research institution – are contributing to the community’s skilled workforce.

This education-driven boom has led to close and mutually beneficial collaboration between institutions and industries alike. One such example is Las Vegas HEALS, which has been instrumental in forging strategic alliances among Nevada State College in Henderson, Touro University, Roseman University of Health Sciences, and local health care professionals and organizations. Leading the charge in education, government, and business partnerships, the City of Henderson, Nevada State College, the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development created the state’s first Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) urban test site. The Henderson Unmanned Vehicle Range (HUVR) at Nevada State College offers commercial UAS designers and operators a designated location where they can safely and accurately test their aircraft. HUVR was originally created to encourage the integration of drones into air traffic systems, and continues to offer businesses and students access to a leading drone testing location.

Located adjacent to Las Vegas, Henderson made a name for itself in the 1990’s as the fastest-growing city in the nation. In fact, Henderson – known for its master-planned communities and high-quality of living – has been at the forefront of Nevada’s growth spurt, exploding from just 60,000 people in 1990 to currently over 300,000. That figure would make Henderson the 14th largest city in the state of California – larger than such cities as Irvine, Glendale and San Bernardino. In addition, there are more than one million people in the workforce within a 45-minute commute shed of Henderson-area business parks. Henderson covers over 100 square miles of the southeast Las Vegas valley.

With a diversifying economy and a maturing population, the future for Henderson and the entire Southern Nevada market is bright indeed. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Henderson in 2017 was 307,928, a number expected to reach 330,495 by 2020 (Source: City of Henderson Community Development & Services, September 2014). Home to 9 colleges and universities, Henderson has a higher percentage of high school and college graduates compared to other major incorporated cities in the Las Vegas MSA.
